1. How do I access the McKay Library resources
from home?
The McKay Library Home Page web address is http://www.lib.byui.edu.
From this screen you can access our online library catalog, our Reference
Online page, and the BYU-Idaho home page. In addition, if you are a student
or employee of BYU-Idaho, you may access some of our paid subscription
databases from home, including the Encyclopedia Britannica Online, the
ProQuest periodical index database, and the NewsBank newspaper database.
Simply select the "Reference Online" page from the library's
main page (the direct URL is http://www.lib.byui.edu/ReferenceOnline.htm),
click on the desired link, and you will be asked to enter your campus
network username and password. (See question 2 for information about usernames
and passwords.) Please note that not all vendors allow us to grant remote
access as described above. Therefore, not all links on the "Reference
Online" page will be accessible from home.

2. What is my username? What is my password/pin
number? How can I change my password/pin number?
Your username is the first part of your BYU-Idaho e-mail address. For
example: if your e-mail address is abc12345@byui.edu then your username
is abc12345. Your password/pin number is the four digit number equal to
the month and year of your birth. For example: if you were born in November
1982, your password/pin number would be 1182. If you were born in March
of 1981, your password/pin number would be 0381. If you need to change
your password/pin number please go to the circulation desk, or any of
the reference/information desks and library personnel will assist you.

3. How do I apply for a job at the McKay Library?
The McKay Library hires a limited number of student employees each semester.
These areas include: Circulation, Computers, Family History Lab, Public
Services, and Technical Services. To apply for a job in these areas please
contact the department supervisor for an application. You may check with
the reference desk for supervisor's names and office locations. The Learning
Assistance Lab located on the second floor of the McKay Library also hires
students for the Study Skills areas, check with the secretary in McKay
272 for more information. Additionally, the Instructional Technology,
Graphic Arts, Media Services, Media Lab, and Help Desk areas located on
the third floor hire student employees, check with the secretary in McKay
321 for more information. BYU-Idaho also employs student custodians in
the library, please contact Student Employment in Kimball 244 for more
information about custodial positions.

4. How can I find printed or audio copies of
the devotionals?
For recent devotional talks go to the BYU-Idaho homepage (www.byui.edu)
and select Devotionals from the topic list. Then choose Ricks College
Devotional Addresses by President David A. Bednar and other speakers.
Select either President David A. Bednar or Guest Speakers. At this point
you will be given a list of dates, speakers and the title of their devotional
address, just click on the address you wish to read to see a full text
copy of the talk. Cassette copies of most of the talks can be purchased
through the Bookstore. The McKay Library has some devotional addresses
on cassette available for check out. Search the Online catalog using the
speaker's name for the author, this will bring up a list of all materials
and their call numbers that are available in the library by that author,
including devotional talks, which are listed by the date of the talk.
It takes at least six months for the library to receive a cassette copy
of the devotional address after it is given.

5. What do I do if I can't I log onto the computer
with my username and password?
Go to the Help Desk in McKay 306 and make sure that the information
in the student database is correct.

6. How many books can I check out? For how long?
How do I renew my library books?
There is no limit to the number of books that a patron may check out at
one time. Books, cassettes, records, tapes, maps, and posters are items
that are normally checked out for two weeks. Books may be renewed two times.
Faculty may keep these items for as long as a semester, if needed. Music
CD's check out for one week, with a limit of 2 CD's per patron. Reference
books, newspapers, and periodicals do not circulate. Fines for overdue items
are assessed at a cost of $0.25 per item per day. Fines for reserve items
are $0.25 per item per hour.

7. If I need a book that the McKay Library doesn't
have, how can I get a copy?
The McKay Library's Interlibrary Loan program allows patrons to borrow books,
periodical articles, thesis papers and conference reports that we don't
have in our collection.
Click on the Interlibrary Loan link from the "Quick Links"
menu of the library's webpage and then select Request a Book Using Interlibrary
Loan. Patrons who have not used the service before will need to register
by selecting the Click here to register option. The information screen
will take you through the registration steps, including the selection
of a User Name and Password. (Note: in the Status and Department boxes
community patrons should select "Other"). Please be sure to
include your e-mail address so the Interlibrary Loan office can let you
know when your items have arrived.
Once you have completed registration you may request Interlibrary Loan
materials by clicking on the Registered Users option and entering your
User Name and Password. The next screen allows you to choose the type
of material you would like to borrow (article, book, report, etc.), view
and/or modify previous requests and update your personal information.
When requesting Interlibrary Loan materials, please fill in as much information
as you can to speed up processing of your items. Items requested by BYU-Idaho
faculty and administration will be delivered to the office number given
in the registration process when they arrive.
BYU-Idaho students and staff, and community patrons will be notified
be e-mail when their materials come in; materials can be picked up at the
Interlibrary Loan office in McKay 164 between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm Monday
through Friday.
On average, it takes 7-10 [3-5] days or
less to receive items. The lending institution usually allows us to use
the material for 4 weeks or less. Ordinarily there is little or no cost
for this service, unless the item is turned in late or is lost. If you

8. How do I reserve a group study room?
11 group study rooms are available on the 2nd floor of the McKay Library.
Study room 208 is located in the west wing and study rooms 252-261 are
located in the east wing. These study rooms are available for groups of
three or more students and can be reserved for two-hour blocks. Sign-up
sheets are located just outside the door of each study room.

9. Can I check out videos from the McKay Library?
The video selection in the McKay Library is intended to support the academic
programs at BYU-Idaho. Students who have been assigned by their teacher
to view a specific movie can come to McKay 324 to watch the video in the
library at no charge. Two group viewing rooms and 30 individual viewing
stations are available. Students can check videos out of the library for
$2 per video per night; there is no charge to faculty members to check
out videos. However, videos that have been assigned for class viewing
are not available to be checked out. Use the McKay Library online
catalog to locate video call numbers.

11. Can I check out library materials if I'm
not a student at BYU-Idaho?
Yes, local patrons who have a public library card may use it to check out
materials from the McKay Library, however patrons must bring their card
to the main circulation desk the first time they use it in order to have
the information on the card put into our library's computer. Patrons who
are not local residents can purchase a library card at the main circulation
desk for $1.

12. Where do I find materials that are on reserve?
Materials that have been placed on Reserve by faculty are located at
the circulation desk. These items may be checked out for two hours. Copies
of materials and links to special websites are available through "Electronic
Reserve", which can be accessed on or off campus via the Internet.
Items can be accessed from the Electronic Reserve link found the the "Quick
Links" menu on the McKay Library's home page. You
may be asked to enter your username, password and domain name (enter Students
for the domain name). Select your instructor's name from the list
and then click on the article title for the appropriate class to bring
up the item.

13. How do I find articles in magazines and
journals? Which database/index should I use?
Magazines, journals and periodicals are indexed in our Serials List.
A printed copy of the list is available at the reference/information desks.
This list will indicate what periodicals the library subscribes to, which
issues we have available, in what format (loose, microfilm or microfiche),
and where they are indexed. Most serials are indexed in one or more of
our online periodical databases, available as a link from the Index to
Articles page. All other serials are indexed in the bound volumes found
in the periodical room.
To access the online periodicals, click on the Index to Aricles link
on the library home page. You can view the databases either alphabetically
or by subject. Select the database that indexes the periodical you are
looking for. Enter your topic and click on Search, which brings up a list
of articles that match. Individual articles may be listed for availability
as an abstract or summary of the full article, a full text version of
the article (or full text with graphics), a page image or have the image
of a house shown. The house image indicates the periodical is available
in the McKay Library and a full text version is not available online.
Users can read the article online, e-mail it to themselves to read later,
or print it out immediately. Articles that are not available in full text
versions can be ordered through Interlibrary
Loan.
These database links provide access to thousands of periodicals; a thorough
search can provide excellent resource material for research and informational
purposes.

14. What services does the McKay Library provide
for students with disabilities?
The McKay Library has a TDD (Telecommunications Device for the Deaf)
located at our main reference desk in the west wing of the first floor;
the number is 208-356-2364 (this will change when
we get our new telephone prefix). We have computer tables with
wheelchair access in all computer areas in the library. (Be
sure to include other resources that we have.)

15. How do I get help with computer problems?
Check with the student employees in the area where your computer is located.
If there is no one available go to the nearest reference/information desk.

16. How do I get my e-mail address?
Students can locate their e-mail address by accessing the BYU-Idaho home
page, selecting Directories, then Student Directory. Type in your last
name followed by your first name; this brings up your entry in the Student
Directory, which contains your e-mail address highlighted in blue. You
may also access the Student Directory from the "Quick Links"
menu on the library's webpage.

17. How can I find out about other colleges
and universities?
The McKay Library provides direct links to a number of intermountain
college and university websites from our Reference Online page. We also
have links to CollegeNET and CollegeSource. Both sites allow you to search
for schools throughout the United States and internationally, based on
geographical regions, tuition costs, majors, sports, etc. It links you
directly to the schools' website, including catalogs, online application
process and bookstores.

18. Where can I get tax forms?
The McKay Library has copies of the Internal Revenue Service tax forms,
check at the reference desk. These forms, along with state income tax
forms, are also available by clicking the Tax Forms link on our Reference
Online page.

19. Can I connect to the network with my laptop
computer in the library?
At present, it is not possible to connect to the network with your personal
laptop computer.

20. Where is the Lost and Found?
Check at the circulation desk for lost and found items (ext. 2355).
Unclaimed items are taken to the Manwaring Center Lost and Found (ext.
2238) daily. Exceptions are lost ID's, which are taken immediately to
the ID Center (ext. 1012); copy cards, which are taken to the Copy Center
(ext. 2382); and floppy disks, which are held at the Computer Lab (ext.
2370) and then taken to the Lost and Found.

21. How can I locate telephone numbers and
zip codes?
The McKay Library has a number of telephone directories for the western
states available at the main Reference desk in the west wing. Copies of
the zip code directories are also located at the east and west reference
desks, as well as in the reference shelves, call number REF HE 6311.A3.
The Canadian Postal Code Directory is call number REF HE 6653.C35. Telephone
listings and addresses are also available under the Directories category
on the library's Reference Online page.

22. Where can I find family history and genealogy
materials?
Sources for family history and genealogical research, using the latest computer
materials, can be found in the Family History Center on the second floor.
Expert genealogists are also available to help patrons. The Center is open
during regular Library hours, as well as 3:00-7:00 p.m. on most Sundays
during the regular school year. For more information, contact Verna Hatch
at ext. 2377 or Blaine Bake at ext. 2376.

23. Why can't I connect to some of the databases?
The database server may be down. If your are unable to connect to one of
the databases linked to the McKay Library's Internet Resource page please

25. Where do I go to send a fax?
Students may send and receive faxes at the Copy Spot. The fax number is:
(208) 356-2385. The costs for sending a fax are: $2.00 for the first page
and $1.00 for each additional page, or $0.50 per page if it is a local or
toll-free call. Receiving a fax costs $0.25 per page. For information on
sending and receiving international faxes, please contact Lana Hepworth

26. Is there a color printer in the library?
What about a color copier?
There is a color printer located in the Student Technology Center, in room
360A. The cost is $.50 per page. Copies of color or black and white pictures
can be made in the Copy Spot, located next to the north entrance. Color
copies range from $.75 to $1.25. Copy machines are self-serve but Copy Spot
employees are available for assistance at all times.

27. Where is the Testing Center and Learning
Assistance Labs (Reading Center, Writing Center, Math Study Center, Tutoring
Center, Study Skills Center, and English as a second language)?
The Testing Center is located in the basement of the west wing of the library.
The entrance is on the east side of the Library, down the stairs in between
the west and east wings. For more information, contact John Dexter at ext.

wing of the library.

28. Where can I get a copy card?
Note: this answer should probably address the new
One Card system also.
Currently, copy cards that allow you to make copies for $0.05 each are
available from the black vending boxes on the wall across from the Copy
Spot (near the north door on the 1st floor). For the initial purchase
price of $1.00 your get a rechargeable card and $.25 worth of copies.
Cards can be recharged at the black vending boxes on the wall or at the
larger copy machines directly across from the main Circulation Desk; insert
your card into the card slot and a $1, $5 or $10 bill into the slot. These
machines do not give change and accept only bills.
